Prof. Alexandre Bayen, EE/CS, University of California, Berkeley

Alexandre Bayen received the Engineering Degree in applied mathematics from the Ecole Polytechnique, France, in July 1998, the M.S. degree in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford University in June 1999, and the Ph.D. in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford University in December 2003. He was a Visiting Researcher at NASA Ames Research Center from 2000 to 2003. Between January 2004 and December 2004, he worked as the Research Director of the Autonomous Navigation Laboratory at the Laboratoire de Recherches Balistiques et Aerodynamiques, (Ministere de la Defense, Vernon, France), where he holds the rank of Major. He has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley since January 2005, and an Associate Professor since 2010.

Bayen has authored over 100 articles in peer reviewed journals and conferences. He is the recipient of the Ballhaus Award from Stanford University, 2004, of the CAREER award from the National Science Foundation, 2009 and he is a NASA Top 10 Innovators on Water Sustainability, 2010. His projects Mobile Century and Mobile Millennium received the 2008 Best of ITS Award for ‘Best Innovative Practice’, at the ITS World Congress and a TRANNY Award from the California Transportation Foundation, 2009. Bayen is the recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) award from the White House, 2010. Mobile Millennium has been featured more than 100 times in the media, including TV channels and radio stations (CBS, NBC, ABC, CNET, NPR, KGO, the BBC), and in the popular press (Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, LA Times).

Kevin A. Shaw, CTO, Sensor Platforms, Inc. 

Kevin A. Shaw has over 20 years in the MEMS industry.  First developing MEMS inertial sensors while at Kionix, then developing MEMS mirror arrays for Calient Networks.  This work resulted in 24 U.S. patents covering accelerometers, biomedical devices, and fiber optic devices. 

 Kevin is also an entrepreneur, having co-founded and sold a company in the transportation services industry. 

He has a Ph.D. in EE (MEMS) from Cornell University and an M.S. Mgt. from Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he is a Sloan Fellow.  Since then he has focused on business development and has spent the last few years at Sensor Platforms driving disruptive changes for the consumer markets using sensors and sensor algorithms.  These sensors are now in almost every mobile device and promise to deeply change the way we interact with the world.

Ben Yu, 
Managing Director, Sierra Ventures

Ben Yu joined Sierra Ventures in 2000 from 3Com where he served as a Senior Systems Architect and Project Manager.  Ben leads Sierra Ventures’ hardware practice and China strategies.  Prior to joining 3Com, while completing his Ph.D. at Princeton University, Ben worked as a Research Assistant at Princeton’s Lightwave Communication Research Lab. Prior to beginning his studies at Princeton, Ben held a variety of engineering consulting roles at Mertz in Australia.

Ben holds both a Ph.D. and Masters in Electrical Engineering from Princeton and a Bachelor of Engineering with 1st class honors from the University of Western Australia.

Ben’s investment focus has been in semiconductors and components, mobile communications, cloud computing and clean technologies. Ben also leads Sierra’s investment practice in China.   His portfolio includes SyChip, Inc. (sold to Murata Electronics North America, Inc.), ParAcer, Inc. (sold to Stratos Lightwave, Inc. (STLW)), AuthenTec, Inc. (AUTH, NASDAQ), SemEquip (sold to Ceradyne), 800App, Applied Microstructures, Inc., MicroPower, sold to Weston Presidio, Digital Media Group Co. Amine Haoui, Ph.D., CEO of Sensys Networks

Over the past two decades Dr. Amine Haoui—a wireless communications pioneer—has founded and led several emerging technology companies. In 1985, Dr. Haoui launched the wireless communications division at TCSI, which grew to become a leading developer of DSP and digital cellular technologies before the group’s successful IPO in 1989. As co-founder of Diva Communications—an innovator in the nascent wireless loop industry—Dr. Haoui served as CEO before acquisition by InnoMedia in 1999. He then served as InnoMedia’s Executive VP for the next four years. In 2003, Dr. Haoui co-founded Sensys Networks, a technology company focused on wireless vehicle detection systems for the transportation industry.

Dr. Haoui holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from UC Berkeley, an M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.

Dr. Yuan Tian, Co-Founder & CTO, InnoTek Group

Dr. Yuan Tian is the Co-Founder and CTO of InnoTek Group (ITG), a leading provider of Intelligent Parking Management system in China. An essential component of the future smart cities, ITG's solution provides unique value to municipal governments and drivers. A combination of wireless sensor network and mobile payment solutions, it  not only helps to manage on-street parking resources effectively and efficiently, but also to eliminate traffic jam and reduce people's carbon footage with it LBS-based parking guidance service. Prior to his venture at ITG, Dr. Tian took a senior research position at the Research and Technology Center of Robert Bosch Group (Bosch RTC). He played an important role at the Internet-of-Things domain in Bosch RTC, ranging from building security to tele-medicine. He also represented Bosch in IPSO Alliance to found the Smart Building Work Group and served as the Founding Chair.

Dr. Tian serves as the Chairman of SVCWireless (Silicon Valley - China Wireless Technology Association) to foster the communication and collaboration of the mobile/wireless industry across the Pacific. Dr. Tian was recently recognized by Hangzhou's 521 plan (Recruitment Program of Global Expert).

Dr. Tian got his PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Ohio State University.

Dr. Hamid Ahmadi,  VP, Technology Strategy&Planning of Huawei Technologies (USA)

 Dr. Ahmadi, an IEEE Fellow, has over 25 years of research, development and management experience with solid technology  background in the areas of wireless and IP networking, telecommunications, high performance switching and routing, network security and systems software in both enterprise IT and telecommunications industries. He functioned in a variety of roles with strong drive for innovation and technical solution creation.

Currently, He is Vice President of Technology Strategy and Planning for Huawei Technologies US R&D groups. In this capacity, his organization is responsible for researching, planning and driving the strategy and direction of key next generation technologies that would translate into current and future business opportunities. He also serves on the advisory board of several start-ups as well as Science Advisory Board of I2R of A*STAR, which fosters world-class scientific research and talent for a vibrant knowledge-based Singapore. He has maintained affiliation as visiting scholar with the Center for Networked Systems, University of California at San Diego since June 2009.

Dr. Ahmadi, a corporate vice president, served most recently as Motorola’s first Chief Architect and Senior Fellow where he led strategic hardware and software architecture planning across all Motorola businesses and R&D. In addition he led Motorola’s Wireless Infrastructure, Software and Solutions Systems Technology Research Group.  Before joining Motorola, Dr. Ahmadi served for over 15 years at IBM on variety of positions including Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Global Communications Sector at IBM. His previous contributions to the company were numerous, including tenure as Director of Security and Networking Research at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center.  Dr. Ahmadi held various leadership roles at the world renowned AT&T Labs for over 5 years, including Vice President of the Global Network and IP Services Planning and Development organizations and Vice President and Chief Technology Architect for Internet and Networking Systems. 

Dr. Ahmadi received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Columbia University, NY, respectively.
