Recent report from McKinsey & company indicates that the opportunities for global healthcare market worth $50 billions and from Pyramid Research that the number of mobile health applications in use is expected to increase to 200 millions in 2011. Mobile health – the use of mobility and wireless technology to provide healthcare and wellness – is growing rapidly in the past few years. With the advent of mobile devices, support by the broadband wireless network, the advancement of sensor technology, the development of Internet of Things (IOT) and the changes in the regulations has driven more growth in this field.
Mobile health is changing the way how care is delivered. It can provide a more affordable way of managing healthcare both from providers and consumers perspective. The explosive growth in healthcare especially combining with mobile and wireless catch many attentions from the technologists and investors alike. What is the future of mobile health? What is the growth of mobile apps? Where is the market for mobile health? What is the business model? As we come to the end of 2011, we are looking the prospect in 2012 in the mobile health market. David Lee, Partner, Gunderson Dettmer David Lee is a member of the Corporate and Securities practice group which advises emerging companies and venture capital firms. David practices in the areas of corporate formation, venture capital financings, mergers and acquisitions, public offerings, public company securities, and technology licensing transactions. David has an active practice representing China-focused emerging companies, both in the United States and in China. He has deep experience representing China’s leading private and public internet companies. In addition, David’s practice involves a broad network of entrepreneurs, angel investors and venture capitalists that are active in developing China-focused companies. David earned his J.D. from Stanford University and his B.A., summa cum laude, from the University of California at Berkeley. Prior to joining Gunderson Dettmer, David was a partner at Orrick and a founding attorney and Director of Venture Law Group.
(Bob) Fu-Yuan Lin 林富元,General Partner, ACorn Campus, Acorn Venture, Asia Capital Group Bob Lin is the founder of Multi-Dimensional Venture Partners, an angel venture group from Silicon Valley and Chairman of Healhtlink Services, a nation-wide medical assistance company in China. He also co-founded and served as General Partner for Acorn Campus and Acorn Angels since late 90’s. Bob has more than 25 years of angels and venture investment expertise with multiple IPOs. He also serves as a partner in PHYCOS Consulting, a very prestigious consulting firm for high level businesses, entrepreneurs, and government. He also has long history of entrepreneurial start-up and international business, marketing, and management experiences. He was well known for launching investment for Avanti (IPO ’95 25x), AltiGen (IPO ‘97) and LightLogic (Sold to Intel for $400M ’01 for 100x). He was an early investor in Vertex Network (Sold to Mitel for $200M ’99, 20x), and MPS (IPO ’04 70x). He was also the co-founder of Pine Photonics (sold to Opnext ’03; IPO ‘07) and Luxnet (Planned IPO 2010). His other portfolios include Fortinet (IPO 2009), Anda Network, MONDAY Tech (sold to Yahoo ‘08) ……… and many more. Bob has been a board director or advisor in the past and present to Pine Photonics of California, Farasis Energy of California, Monday Technologies (sold ’08), Greatland Electronics, and Luxnet, of Taiwan; EPIN Technologies, Kingstar Winning of China. Bob is also the author of four top selling books in Asia: “Find Your Way To Success & Happiness” in 2003 (Top seller of the year); “Creating Value to Differentiate” in 2004 (Honored with the National Level Golden Book Award); as well as “Build Your Career From Where You Are”, best seller in 2005. His 4th book “It is easy to be super happy” became popular in late 2007, and Bob is now working on the 5th book “Successful Families” with one of the largest publishers in Asia. Bob is also the leading columnist for the largest business/investment newspaper in Taiwan “Economic Daily News”, and “Commercial Times” as well as many leading investment magazines in China. He has been a long time guitarist and pianist in the popular rock band “Southern Breed” in the ‘60s in Asia and “Silicon Valley Band” present days. Bob served as Chairman of Global Monte Jade Association, considered one of the most influential Chinese hi-tech executive associations worldwide. He was the Chairman in Chinese Association of International Trade (CAIT) twice in a row and a Board member of Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce twice. He has also served both as the Commissioner and the Chairman of Santa Clara County – HsinChu County Commission. Bob has a MSEE degree from University of California at Santa Barbara. He has been very active in community services.
Bryant Lin, MD, MEng, Asst. Professor of Medicine and Co-Director of the Syncope Center, Stanford University Dr. Bryant Lin is a Clinical Asst. Professor of Medicine and Co-Director of the Syncope Center at Stanford University where he attends to patients in the Internal Medicine Clinic, researches new medical devices and teaches students and residents. He has served a consultant and co-founder to several startups in the medical device and telemedicine fields. He received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from MIT in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. His medical education, internal medicine residency training and fellowships (Cardiac Research and Biodesign) were completed at Tufts University, Tufts Medical Center and Stanford University respectively.
Winston Choe, Ecosystem Director, Netbook and Tablet Group, Intel Winston Choe is currently the Tablet Ecosystem Director in the Intel Netbook and Tablet Group, where he manages development of the ecosystem through engagements with key-customers, strategic-partners, venture-ecosystem, and new market-development. His background covers 20 years in the Mobility, Communications, Software, and Services industries, where he has developed businesses at startup ventures and multinational-corporations across the US and Asia. Winston founded three software ventures in business-networking, mobile cloud-computing and networked-multimedia, which he developed from concept to commercialization. Prior to joining Intel, he was the Founder at Confidantly, a business-networking software company where he established the team, completed product-development, and launched Beta services through online, social and affiliate-marketing. Previously, Winston has managed sales and business-development organizations in the HP Handheld, Nokia Mobility, Sun Consumer Mobile, and DEC Global Services groups where he managed carriers, strategic-partners, and new market-development.
Ravi Amble, Director & Principal Investor at LeadFormix, Inc. Ravi is current the director & principal investor at LeadFormix, Inc., co-founder & director at SoluGence, Inc. and charter member at TiE Silicon Valley. Previously, he was co-founder & COO at Fujitsu Consulting (Formerly Rapidigm), director, technical services at iGate Capital.
Erica Weirich, MD, Executive Director, Global Health Research Foundation, Stanford University Dr. Erica Weirich is the founder and director of Global Health Research Foundation (GHRF), a practicing physician in Los Altos, CA, and Adjunct Professor of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. In the mobile health arena, GHRF has integrated mobile applications into health and environment data repository systems to ensure rapid access to "outcomes" for programs in Uganda, Bhutan, Tanzania and even in Fresno, California. GHRF assists programs in utilizing appropriate technology to ensure problem identification, disease reduction, resource targeting and efficiency, generating platforms for true "tests of change" (reduction in morbidity/mortality, etc). Focused on health and eco-health improvement in resource-poor areas, GHRF is orienting and integrating technology to ensure that functioning solutions are interoperable, sustainable, scalable, and transferable. Dr. Weirich earned a Masters in International Development Policy along with her Medical Degree at Stanford University. In addition to teaching medicine, Dr. Weirich teaches Stanford Engineering students through the "Engineering for Good" program developed and directed by Dr. My T. Le, who also serves as Engineering Director for Global Health Research Foundation.
