What is IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)? What does IMS promise to the world tomorrow?

IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) has rapidly emerged as a critical technology in the Operator’s services to offer the subscriber, primarily because of its potential to enable both wireless and wire-line carriers to create and deliver a full portfolio of compelling data services effectively with low CapEx. To date, IMS has remained primarily in the service provider domain, with little if any crossover into the world of enterprise networks. But as IMS deployment begin to surface in more Carrier networks, it is almost certain to expand into the enterprise sector, and VOIP is likely to be among its most prominent entry points.

In this talk, we will focus on the following:

  • An introduction of IMS technology and overview of its key objectives.
  • An analysis of the increasingly important role of IMS in fixed/mobile convergence and NGN.
  • Applications that will be deployed using IMS (services, qualities, accounting and management, VOIP, UMA, GSM/CDMA etc.)
  • An overview of IMS standards activities, including the roles played by the IETF, 3GPP, 3GPP2, ETSI, ITU, OMA, CableLabs and various other bodies working on aspects of IMS, as well as the relationships among them and the standards they've created.
  • Challenges and futures of IMS

Arthur Feather
Mobile Architecture & Standards, Global
Cisco Systems, Inc

Art Feather has over 12 years experience in mobile architecture development and 20+ years in computer networks. He currently leads a team at Cisco Systems developing long-term architectural approaches for building scalable mobile and wireless networks that use IP and IP infrastructure as their foundation. This includes both data and voice services, including the move toward Voice over IP solutions and mobile networks based on IP rather than circuit-switched services. The scope includes 3GPP, 3GPP2, WiMAX Forum, IETF, GSM-A and other mobile and wireless organizations.

Cisco Systems develops and delivers products and solutions such as the core IP/MPLS mobile network infrastructure, optimizing radio equipment interconnect over IP, IP-based mobile signaling products, radio-to-packet network gateways, and solutions for service enablement/security/content management/billing though the Services Exchange Framework and IMS functionality.

Paul Longhenry
Vice President of Business Development
Sonim Technologies

Sonim develops server and client bas solutions that are built upon a future-proof, mobile VoIP platform. Sonim's products provides value-added voice and enabler services that are easily integrated with IMS-based networks and mobile terminals. These solutions create significant competitive differentiations and new revenue streams for both vendors and mobile operators. Sonim's servers and clients are agnostic to network type, and can be implemented with all IP-based networks, e.g. GPRS, EDGE, CDMA, WCDMA. CDMA2000, WiFi, wireline, etc.

Sonim's standards-based solutions are OEM'ed by leading infrastructure providers including Ericsson and Nortel, as well as major branded handset manufacturers. By dynamically optimizing application performance to account for changing mobile network and terminal conditions, the Sonim solutions ensure superior quality and seamless integration with IMS.
